Officials from Byculla police station had no idea that they would be able to achieve a breakthrough in a two-year-old pending stabbing case, when they arrested a youth in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a school boy.
The Byculla police succeeded in solving the case for Kurla Railway Police station. On April 23, a youth was taken into custody by the Byculla police.
When they tactfully interrogated him it was revealed that he had participated in a cold-blooded murder of a businessman two years ago.
The culprit confessed that he was behind the brutal stabbing of 30-year-old Mohommed Ali Parmare alias Piya. Piya, a businessman, was returning from work at 10.45 pm in a Kurla bound train, when three assailants entered the second class compartment and assaulted him, on February 7, 2000.
The victim was brutally stabbed 16 times, while the assailants jumped off, as the train slowed down at Wadala station.
As a result, the case was registered at Kurla Railway Police station. As it remained unsolved, it was subsequently handed to the Byculla police. DCP R D Shinde (Zone III) and ACP Raja Pawar took up the challenge, and handled the case.
The accused, Rahul Sowale (22) was thoroughly interrogated. An officer said: "He was brought in for questioning in connection with a kidnapping and murder of a child. That is when we were informed that he was a part of the brutal train murder."
According to Sowale, a driver at Reay road, he was offered Rs 50,000 to kill Piya. He said, "I was taken to platform 2 of Dockyard railway station where the victim was pointed out to us. We boarded the train, did our job, and jumped out of the running train."
In the bargain, the culprits injured themselves. There were about 30 to 35 commuters present in the compartment, but no one intervened. According to police sources, the motive has not yet been ascertained.
